February 12, 2025 – In a significant step toward improving the country’s educational infrastructure, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand officially broke ground for the highly anticipated Cotton Field Secondary School.

This marks a crucial milestone in the Government’s ongoing commitment to expanding and modernizing educational facilities across Guyana.

The project, which will be carried out by Builders Hardware, General Supplies, and Construction, has been awarded a contract valued at G$1,798,137,760. The tendering process was conducted through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board in accordance with the Public Procurement Act.

A Modern Learning Environment

Once completed, the new Cotton Field Secondary School will provide students with state-of-the-art classrooms, administrative offices, sports facilities, and essential amenities aimed at fostering a comprehensive and engaging learning environment for students in Cotton Field and surrounding areas.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister Manickchand underscored the importance of community involvement in the school’s construction and oversight, urging parents, teachers, and community members to actively participate in ensuring the project meets high standards.

She further emphasized the government’s dedication to providing students with high-quality education, equipping them with trained teachers, laboratories, and a conducive learning environment.

Project Timeline and Investment

The school’s construction is expected to be completed within an 18-month period, with an anticipated opening in August 2026. Additionally, a 12-month defects liability period has been established to address any potential structural concerns after completion.

To kickstart the project, a mobilization fund of G$179,813,776 has been allocated for site preparation and initial procurement of materials.

Commitment to Educational Growth

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Government of Guyana, remains committed to strengthening the country’s education system as part of its broader vision for national development.

The Cotton Field Secondary School project aligns with the government’s efforts to ensure that students have access to top-tier educational facilities, fostering their academic and professional growth.

With the promise of a cutting-edge institution in the making, students and educators in the Essequibo region can look forward to an enhanced learning experience that meets international standards, further solidifying Guyana’s commitment to educational excellence.
