Mother Arrested for Attempted Murder of 9-Year-Old Daughter

Police are investigating a disturbing incident involving the attempted murder of a 9-year-old girl, which took place around 22:00 hrs on July 7, 2024. The mother of the child has been arrested in connection with the crime.

According to police reports, the 9-year-old girl resides in Zeelugt with her mother and her mother’s boyfriend. The child’s father passed away approximately four years ago.

On the night in question, a heated argument erupted between the woman and her boyfriend. During the altercation, the boyfriend disparaged the woman and her daughter, calling them “wastes” and declaring that he no longer wanted them in his life before leaving the house.

Following the boyfriend’s departure, the woman reportedly called her daughter and told her that her biological father was already dead and that her stepfather no longer wanted them. She then allegedly took a ‘chopper’ and inflicted a chop wound on her daughter’s left arm in an attempt to kill her. The child managed to escape and was rescued by a neighbor who took her to Leonora Cottage Hospital.

The child was examined by a doctor who listed her condition as stable. She was later transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was admitted for further treatment.

Police later contacted the mother at her home and found her with a chop wound on her left arm. She claimed that she had inflicted the wound on herself.

The woman was arrested and taken to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where her condition was also deemed stable. After receiving medical attention, she was discharged and escorted to the Leonora Police Station, where she is currently in custody and assisting with the ongoing investigation.
