Joel Adams, a 14-year-old student from Dennis Street Sophia Care Centre, tragically lost his life around 15:05 hrs on Tuesday at the National Aquatic Centre in Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.

According to reports from the Guyana Police Force, Adams left the Care Centre with a group of children at approximately 13:30 hrs to attend a swim program at the Aquatic Centre.

Caretaker Miss Khemwatti Dasrat reported that around 14:55 hrs, she heard a whistle blow at the Aquatic Centre, signaling the children to exit the pool.

A swim coach recounted witnessing Adams perform a backflip into the pool. A lifeguard immediately jumped in to rescue him. Adams was quickly pulled from the water and attended to by an on-site nurse.

An ambulance was called, and he was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is currently at the GPHC Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination as authorities continue to investigate the incident.
