The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has shut down six illegal mining operations in the Mazaruni Mining District, Region Seven, resulting in the arrest of 38 individuals and the seizure of mining equipment.
The enforcement exercise was carried out on Tuesday by the GGMC’s Corps of Wardens in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force following reports of unlawful mining activities in the area.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the six operations were being conducted within a quarry area without authorization. During the joint operation, authorities confiscated several pieces of equipment and machinery believed to have been used in support of the illegal activities.
Officials have since implemented surveillance measures in the area to monitor activity and prevent the resumption of unauthorized mining operations.
The Ministry reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining, warning that those engaged in unlawful activities within the sector will face enforcement action.
It emphasized that efforts will continue to identify, disrupt and prosecute illegal mining operations as part of ongoing measures to protect Guyana’s natural resources and ensure compliance with mining regulations.
