Three young men lost their lives following a horrific two-vehicle collision along the Maida Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, on Tuesday afternoon.
Dead are 16-year-old Porshatam Hoolasia of Haswell, Port Mourant; 19-year-old Ameer Khan of John Village; and 23-year-old Priyas Mursalin of Chesney Front, Corentyne.
The fatal crash occurred at about 3:30 p.m. and involved motor cars PLL 4312 and PAL 9292.
Reports indicate that Khan was driving east along the roadway with Hoolasia seated in the front passenger seat and Mursalin in the rear. At the same time, the other vehicle, driven by 44-year-old Ramesh Aravanan of Miss Phoebe, Corentyne, was travelling in the opposite direction.
It is alleged that Khan attempted to overtake another vehicle and entered the path of the oncoming car, resulting in a head-on collision. The impact reportedly caused Khan’s vehicle to veer into a nearby Guyana Power and Light pole.
Hoolasia was pronounced dead at the scene, while Khan and Mursalin, along with the other driver, were pulled from the wreckage and transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, Khan and Mursalin later succumbed to their injuries. Aravanan received medical attention for injuries sustained in the crash.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on the three deceased to determine their exact causes of death.
Authorities are continuing their investigations into the fatal accident.
