The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Thursday said 41-year-old Nadia Mohamed, the wife of well-known businessman Azruddin Mohamed, remains in police custody after Wednesday’s fatal accident.

The GPF said it would like to dispel the misleading social media reports that she was released from police custody.

“The GPF indicated last evening that the woman was detained by the Police and assisting with the investigations. She subsequently sought medical attention and is back in police custody assisting with the investigations,” the GPF said in a short statement.

The accident in question occurred at about 15:20 hrs on Nelson Mandela Avenue, Georgetown on Wednesday.

Enquiries disclosed that Nadia was driving motor jeep PSS #7007 west along the northern drive lane of the road when it collided with motorcycle #CH 1099  driven by Wendel Oudkerk of Lot 65 Lamaha Springs, Georgetown and pillion rider Odessia Sam, a 42-year-old female of Lot 170 Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown.

It is alleged that the driver of the motorcycle, on approaching the junction of Nelson Mandela and Critchlow Avenue, failed to stop and proceeded to cross the road going from south to north, in a bid to proceed onto the northern carriageway at an opening between the median.

In doing so he ended up in the path of the motor jeep.

As a result, the front of the motor jeep collided with the right side of the motorcycle, causing the motorcyclist along with the pillion rider to fall onto the road surface where they received injuries about their bodies.

The driver of the motorcycle was picked up in a semi-conscious state by   Emergency Medical Technicians, placed into an ambulance and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, while the pillion rider was placed into a police vehicle and transported to the said hospital.

The pillion rider was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead on arrival. While the driver was admitted to the Critical Bay of the GPHC.
