22.9kg cocaine case: one convicted, one denies charge

January 16, 2026 — Two men charged in connection with the possession of a large quantity of cocaine appeared before Magistrate Weever at the Wales Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where one was sentenced to prison while the other was granted bail.
Dyal Simon and Adonayi Hoyte were jointly charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to the law, involving 22.934 kilograms of cocaine.
During the court proceedings, Hoyte pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was subsequently granted bail in the sum of GYD$200,000.
Simon, however, pleaded guilty and was convicted. The court sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of GYD$33,951,000.
The matter arose from investigations conducted by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU). Further proceedings in the case against Hoyte are pending.
