Broan Luke, the man who admitted to raping, beating, and robbing a 64-year-old woman, was on Wednesday, sentenced to 20 years’ in prison by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall.

Earlier this month, Luke called “Bryan”, 50, had pleaded guilty to the following offences: rape, robbery under-arms, common assault, and burglary—all committed on the elderly woman.

On August 15, 2021, he broke into the woman’s home while she was asleep with her granddaughter, woke her up, beat and raped her, and robbed her of cash.

He had related to detectives that he had consumed Vodka with a friend and had smoked a “joint” [marijuana] prior to arriving at the victim’s home.

Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall, in her sentencing remarks, noted that Luke violated the woman most perversely and was ruthless towards her.

In the end, he was sentenced to 20 years on the rape charge, 10 years for burglary, 12 years for robbery under-arms, and six years for assault.

These sentences will run concurrently, meaning that the convict will only have to serve 20 years. The Judge also ordered that he be credited for time spent in pre-trial detention.

Luke of East Berbice-Corentyne, was previously convicted of abduction for which he was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined $500,000 by a magistrate.
