The Ethnic Relations Commission is hoping to mend the fractured society with a virtual “national conversation on ethnic relations”. This conversation titled “How can we improve ethnic relations in Guyana,” will be held on December 14 and 15 and is expected to facilitate “frank and open discussions” on issues that impede ethnic harmony the ERC said in a statement on Wednesday.

The discussion which comes after general and regional elections and the killing of the Henry cousins and Haresh Singh which sparked protests and intense debates on social media will see a report which is expected to be tabled in the National Assembly.

The ERC said that both President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Leader of the Opposition, Joseph Harmon are invited to address the opening segment. This segment would include presentations by Chairman of the ERC, John Smith, Ms. Mikiko Tanaka, UN Resident Coordinator and UG Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Paloma Mohamed-Martin. The Commission plans to hold a special segment to “facilitate the views and recommendations of young people” on the first day. The event will be live streamed the ERC said.
