Police have confirmed that foul play has been ruled out in the death of 39-year-old Treena De Weever, whose body was discovered in a canal at North Ruimveldt on Sunday, January 18.

According to police, a post-mortem examination revealed that De Weever, a mother of three, died as a result of drowning.

Her body was found around 10:00 a.m. in a canal near Lamaha Springs and Barbie Dam.

De Weever, also known to residents as “Samantha,” lived in a squatting area in North Ruimveldt with her reputed husband. Her mother informed investigators that she was a psychiatric patient.

Residents of the community told BIG Smith News Watch that De Weever was often under the influence of alcohol and had previously fallen into a trench near her home while attempting to cross a bridge in the area. On several occasions, she had to be rescued by community members.

A close friend reported that De Weever was last seen alive at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, and noted that she appeared depressed at the time.

Residents also recalled that the canal where her body was found is connected to the trench she regularly crossed on her way home.

Police said De Weever’s body was found lying face down and had visible marks; however, investigators have determined that her death was not the result of any criminal act.
