Mining Operator Fined After Illegal River Operations Uncovered

January 21 2026
An illegal mining operation along the Essequibo River has been shut down following inspections by the Ministry of Natural Resources, as authorities intensify efforts to enforce compliance with the Guyana Mining Act and its accompanying regulations.
According to the ministry, recent inspections were carried out on nine mining operations in the Essequibo River by its Corps of Wardens. One operation was found to be in breach of mining regulations.
The non-compliant operation, located at J-199/000/10 and overseen by Jonathan Rodrigues, was discovered to be operating without the required permission and conducting mining activities within a designated buffer zone. During the inspection, the general manager of the operation was found in possession of one ounce and 13 pennyweights of gold.
The individual was arrested and subsequently placed before the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offences and was fined. The seized gold was lodged at the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) headquarters.
Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Vickram Bharrat, reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining, stating that authorities will not tolerate activities that undermine the law or threaten the country’s natural resources.
He further noted that the ministry will continue to intensify its efforts against illegal mining, in keeping with calls by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali to address non-compliant operations across the sector.
The Ministry of Natural Resources has indicated that inspections will continue and that details of all breaches will be made public. Operators were also reminded to conduct their activities within the confines of the law, as all offenders will be dealt with without fear or favour.
