One Dead After Boat Capsizes in Berbice River

April 11, 2025 – A 30-year-old woman lost her life following a tragic boat accident on the Berbice River Friday morning near De Veldt Village.
According to a police report, the victim has been identified as Kayandra Lindie of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice. The incident occurred during a river journey involving boat captain Aldwayn Denhart, 34, and six other passengers, including two children.
According to Denhart, who owns and operates the vessel, the group departed Sand Hills Village early Friday en route to New Amsterdam. While navigating near De Veldt, Denhart reported that the vessel struck an object near the engine, causing him to lose control. The boat then capsized.
Residents in the area rushed to assist and managed to pull the passengers from the water. Lindie, however, was found unresponsive. She, along with three other passengers, was transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Lindie was pronounced dead on arrival, while the others remain under observation at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
