MV BARIMA DISTRESS: three-year-old separated from mother and sibling, remains missing

July 19 2026
Alicia Atkinson, a three-year-old girl from Kairuni along the Linden Highway, is among the passengers who were onboard the distressed MV Barima, which sank off the coast of Essequibo between July 18 and 19, 2026, while on a voyage from Georgetown to Port Kaituma.
A relative, Deborah Klass, told BIG Smith News Watch that Alicia was travelling with her mother and brother to visit their grandfather in Region One before returning home.
According to information shared with the family, Alicia’s mother said she had both children with her, but during the incident someone came from behind and grabbed the child, forcing her to let go.
The family said Alicia’s mother and brother have since been found, but the three-year-old remains missing.
Relatives are appealing to anyone with information on Alicia Atkinson’s whereabouts to contact 670-7326.
