Two juvenile detainees from the Sophia Holding Centre broke their way out of the facility on Monday night while re-angling CCTV cameras in the process which were trained on their escape path.

The 17 and 16 year olds were being held at the facility for murder and break and entry and larceny respectively. They hail from the North West District and Berbice.

Police sources indicated that sometime between 00:30 and 01:30 on Monday, the two escaped from their cell by spraining boards from the ceiling of the cell, crawled along the ceiling to another part of the building and re-angled the cameras which were covering a specific location of the compound.

The two then broke off a padlock to an internal grill door and made their dash for freedom by placing a mat over the razor wire fence to scale same.
