As part of its ongoing literacy initiatives, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched the ‘Primary School Libraries’ program, with the official ceremony taking place at Grove Primary School on the East Bank of Demerara this morning (September 9, 2024).
Assistant Chief Education Officer (Literacy), Stembiso Grant, highlighted that the National Literacy Department has been tasked with eliminating illiteracy in schools and communities.
The department is focused on enhancing literacy programs by providing children with access to storybooks, an initiative that began as an idea in 2023 and became a reality in 2024, Grant said.
Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, emphasized that every primary school in the country will receive a library through this initiative, with plans to expand to secondary schools, noting that the libraries will be stocked with age-appropriate storybooks, aiming to foster a love for reading among students.
The Minister stated that this is an investment in our nation’s children, noting that these facilities will be accessible to children throughout Guyana.
She urged the public to spread the word that every primary school now has a library filled with the most updated, child-friendly storybooks.
The Ministry of Education views this initiative as a significant milestone in its commitment to improving literacy and educational resources for students.
The primary school libraries are seen as a crucial part of the ministry’s strategy to nurture a love for reading and support the academic growth of young learners.
