Man Sentenced to 29 Years for Stabbing Wife to Death

Sherlock James, a 59-year-old resident of Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, has been sentenced to 29 years in prison for the 2019 murder of his wife, Vinnette Headley-James.
The sentence was handed down by Justice Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the High Court in Demerara.
James, who initially pleaded not guilty, was convicted after a jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict.
The tragic incident occurred at the couple’s home when James, allegedly suspecting his wife of infidelity, stabbed her five times during an argument.
Headley-James, a 44-year-old clothes vendor and mother of eight, was attacked while in the kitchen. One of the couple’s daughters witnessed the stabbing while holding her six-month-old child.

When the daughter tried to intervene, James took the baby from her, threw the child on the ground, and threatened his daughter with the knife, forcing her to flee.
Headley-James managed to escape but was severely wounded and later died at the CC Nicholson Hospital from multiple stab wounds.
James, who had attempted suicide following the fatal stabbing, was found by police lying in the backyard.
The daughter was called as a prosecution witness.
During the sentencing, the court heard impact statements from the victim’s family, reports from a prison welfare officer and psychiatrist, and submissions from both the defence and prosecution.
Although James expressed remorse, saying, “I’m sorry for what go down with me and my wife”,
Justice Ally-Seepaul noted his lack of genuine regret.
Defence attorney Hewley Griffith acknowledged the tragic nature of the incident and James’ role in destroying the family, but maintained that James continued to assert his innocence.
In her sentencing decision, Justice Ally-Seepaul highlighted several aggravating factors, including the defencelessness of Headley-James, who was unarmed when attacked in front of her daughter and grandchild, the severity of the wounds, and the domestic violence setting of the crime.
She found no evidence to support James’ suspicions of his wife’s infidelity and described his actions as driven by possessiveness and a fragile ego.
Despite James’ courtroom apologies, the judge noted his continued denial of guilt and him accusing his daughter of lying on him.
Justice Ally-Seepaul set a base sentence of 35 years, with reductions for mitigating factors, including James’ clean criminal record and favourable probation report.
Additionally, five years were deducted for the time James had already spent in pre-trial custody, resulting in a final sentence of 29 years in prison.
Prosecutors Padma Dubraj and Rbina Christmas represented the state in the case.
