The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (MLGRD) has engaged Huawei Guyana in discussions aimed at leveraging technology to address illegal dumping and strengthen waste management systems across the country.

The meeting forms part of the Government of Guyana’s wider push to modernise public service delivery through digital and data-driven solutions, aligned with the strategic vision of Minister Priya Manickchand.

During the engagement, Huawei presented a range of proposed technological tools focused on surveillance, monitoring and enforcement to help deter illegal dumping activities. Discussions also centred on integrating smart systems into existing environmental management frameworks to improve compliance and enforcement capacity.

The initiative follows a series of consultations led by the ministry with key agencies, including the Guyana Police Force, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the municipal court system. These engagements are part of a coordinated, multi-agency approach to strengthening enforcement through technology and legislation.

The collaboration is expected to support improved environmental management, enhance enforcement mechanisms and contribute to better public health and sanitation outcomes nationwide.

The MLGRD delegation included senior technical and legal officers, while Huawei was represented by its country management team and technical specialists. The company has previously supported several national ICT initiatives in Guyana, including elements of the Safe City Programme and traffic monitoring systems.
