Nicaragua topple ‘Lady Jags’ on home soil

Guyana’s thrilling quest for glory at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics kicked off with a heart-wrenching 3-1 defeat against Nicaragua in their CONCACAF Women’s Qualifier opener.

The electrifying match at the National Track and Field Facility showcased the fierce determination of the Lady Jags, who battled valiantly but fell victim to a relentless Nicaraguan squad that exploited defensive blunders, especially in the first half.

In a shocking twist, Nicaragua seized the lead just three minutes in, as Sheyla Flores capitalized on a catastrophic back-pass.

But the Lady Jags roared back! Annalisa Vincent leveled the score with a thunderous header in the 18th minute, igniting hopes of a comeback. However, just before halftime, Nuria Marquez struck back, weaving through defenders to restore Nicaragua’s advantage.

The second half brought further heartbreak for the home crowd when Doriana Aguilar tapped in a cross from Flores, stretching the lead to 3-1 and leaving fans in stunned silence.

With this victory, Nicaragua solidifies its position in Group B, having previously trounced Antigua and Barbuda 4-0. Guyana now faces a daunting uphill battle in this fiercely competitive five-team group, where the winner will secure a coveted spot in the 2026 Concacaf W Championship, the final gateway to the World Cup and Olympics.

Ranked 12th in CONCACAF, Guyana stands as the second-highest team in the group, trailing only powerhouse Jamaica at 5th. Nicaragua (18th), Dominica (27th), and Antigua and Barbuda (19th) round out the competition.

The Lady Jags will regroup and refocus, gearing up for their crucial qualifier against Dominica in February 2026, as they strive to keep their dreams of international glory alive.
