November 12 2024 – This morning, Susan Rodrigues, Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, held discussions with members of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on advancing Guyana’s National Housing Programme.

The meeting, attended by GCCI President Kester Hutson and Senior Vice President Kathy Smith, focused on the role of housing in the country’s economic growth and social development.

Minister Rodrigues underscored the government’s commitment to housing as a pillar of national development and a means of economic empowerment for low-income citizens. She highlighted the substantial investments made to establish housing schemes equipped with essential infrastructure such as clean water and electricity.

Additionally, the Minister referenced the strategic 2020-2025 plan by the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), aimed at expanding access to potable water across the nation.

Among the transformative projects discussed was Silica City, which is set to become Guyana’s first smart city, reflecting a modern approach to urban development. Rodrigues also outlined the Electronic Planning and Development Single Window System, a new digital platform that streamlines the application process, offering transparency and predictability for investors and applicants.

This innovation is designed to create a favorable environment for private sector engagement and investment.

The meeting emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving national development goals, and chamber members were invited to participate in a Q&A session, where they gained further insight into various government initiatives. The discussion highlighted the government’s dedication to fostering a collaborative environment to drive forward Guyana’s housing and economic development agenda.
