๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐, ๐๐๐๐ – Three families of Haslington, East Coast Demerara, are celebrating homeownership, after receiving the keys to their new houses through the Ministry of Housing and Water โ Central Housing and Planning Authorityโs (CH&PA) Core Home Support initiative. The initiative is executed in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), as part of the wider Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme (AHUAP).

The keys and electrical certificates were handed over by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal at the Ministry, alongside CH&PA’s Director of Operations, Mrs. Denise King-Tudor and Deputy Director of Community Development, Mrs. Donell Bess-Bascom.
Among the new homeowners is Ms. Maylene OโDell, who shared her relief at no longer having to pay rent.

Ms. O’Dell said, “I am so happy that I got this key that I would be able to go into my new home.” She added, “It will help us in a lot of ways because we used to pay a rent of $30,000 a month so [now] we get our own house that money [will] go to something else.”
Ms. Evette Abrams also expressed her happiness to have the new home. Despite owning her plot of land for years, she faced several struggles that prevented her from building and hailed the programme for the much-needed support.

Each Core Home, valued at approximately GYD $5 million-$6.5 million, includes two bedrooms, a kitchen, and indoor sanitary facilities. Beneficiaries make a contribution of GYD $100,000 toward constructionโoffering a far more affordable and secure alternative to renting.
AHAUP’s Component 1.1: Affordable and Sustainable Housing, supports both Core Home construction and Home Improvement Subsidies (the provision of materials to execute home repairs).
Approximately 300 Core Homes are targeted for construction and disbursement of 916 Home Improvement Subsidies ranging from GYD $500,000 to $750,000. The programmeโs boundaries span communities from Georgetown to Grove on the East Bank Demerara; up to Hope on the East Coast Demerara; and areas on the West Bank Demerara, including Westminster, Onderneeming, Recht-Door-Zee, Lust en Rust, and Parfaite Harmonie Phase II.
Applications for the initiative is closed and all beneficiaries were selected.
On the East Coast Demerara alone, an estimated GYD $243.25 million has been invested so far for building 25 Core Homes and issuing 148 Home Improvement Subsidies.
