A thirty-eight-year-old from the Soesdyke High way, was on Friday morning charged with the rape of a child under the age of sixteen. The man, Theon Thores appeared in the Suddie Magistrates Court, on the Essequibo Coast.

Magistrate Esther Sam heard that on Monday February 15th 2021, at a location named in court documents, the accused allegedly engaged in sexual penetration of a child below the age of sixteen. The accused was not required to plead to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $150,000.

The accused, who was not represented by an attorney, told the court that he has been in a common law relationship with a female for over a year.

The prosecution initially objected to bail, arguing that the accused may interfere with the victim.

The Magistrate pointed out that since there is no evidence to support the fact that the accused may tamper with the witness, and given the fact that the accused has not conveyed any intentions of tampering with the alleged victim, bail may be granted under the condition that the accused stays 100 ft. away from the victim.

The case has been adjourned to March 29th for statements.
