Man Granted Bail After Assaulting ‘Child Mother’

July 14 2025
A 23-year-old father was on Friday granted bail in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after being charged with assault causing actual bodily harm against the mother of his child.
The defendant, Tony Nelson, an inventory clerk of Lot 1 Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty to answer the charge.
Nelson denied the allegation and entered a not guilty plea after the charge was read to him in open court.
It is alleged that on June 27, at La Penitence, Georgetown, Nelson assaulted Alicia Daily, the mother of his child, during what was described as a confrontation involving their child.
During the court proceedings, Nelson was represented by attorney-at-law Latchmie Rahamat, who told the court that her client strongly refuted the claim.

She explained that, based on her instructions, on the day in question, Nelson had gone to collect his child from the virtual complainant, who allegedly refused to hand the child over.
According to Rahamat, an argument ensued, and the situation escalated when the woman allegedly attacked Nelson, prompting him to act in self-defense.
The attorney also argued that there were no aggravating factors preventing the court from granting bail, noting that Nelson is not a flight risk and has no known prior infractions.
She subsequently requested reasonable bail for her client.
The prosecution, while not objecting to bail, asked that both parties be placed on a bond to keep the peace, given the domestic nature of the dispute.
After considering the submissions, Magistrate McGusty released Nelson on $20,000 bail and placed him on a peace bond for the duration of the matter.
The case was adjourned to July 18 for further proceedings.
