ATTACK ON PROSECUTOR’S HOME: Prosecutor was under the radar; SOCU probed him for corruption

On Sunday evening, gunmen open fire at the Craig, East Bank Demerara home of 39-year old Police Prosecutor, Corporal Heamchand Sukhna.

Detectives have since launched an investigation into the incident which took place just after 20:00hrs Sunday evening as the policeman and his family were at home.

The policeman reported being in the yard with his family when he heard what sounded like gunshots which forced him to take cover.

He told detectives that he observed two males wearing hoodies standing to the gap of his home firing shots at him but he and his family escaped unhurt while there was damage to a number of her personal assets.

Heamchand Sukhna is stationed in the police Regional Division 4 B where he serves as the Police Prosecutor for the Diamond Magistrates Court 1.

It was back in June of this year that BIG Smith News Watch carried an article where the conduct of the said police prosecutor was raising concerns as he was thought to the acting in a manner that did not serve the best interest of the public and those who abide by the laws, for that he was placed under the radar by the colleagues in the investigative arm of the force.

The Special Organised Crime Unit commenced an investigation into Corporal Heamchand Sukhna, his conduct and alleged suspicions that he might be engaging in corrupt deals and transactions during the execution of his duties as the Diamond Magistrates Court.

On Friday morning when we checked with sources, BIG Smith News Watch was informed that the investigations into Corporal Heamchand Sukhna by the Special Organised Crime unit did not find any substantive evidence to directly link the policeman to any wrongdoing.

In June, this publication reported that although being provided with information that suspects held in connection with a robbery and who were slated to appear in court would have had additional charges read to them, the police prosecutor failed or refused to inform the court of the magistrate of the new development.

This resulted in one of the accused who turned up for his initial matter, to be placed on bail as the magistrate was unaware that there were other charges filed against the said accused. As such, bail was granted and the police were forced to execute a re-arrest.

On Sunday night, Two .40 spent shells and five .22 spent shell were recovered from the scene of the shooting at the police prosecutor’s home.
