Lindener to Serve 24 Years for Double-Fatal Arson

39-Y-O Uhalisi “Akali” Moore of Silvertown, Wismar, Linden, has been sentenced to 24 years’ imprisonment on each of two counts of murder—after admitting he set his family home on fire in 2023, killing his sister and niece.

The sentences were ordered to run concurrently.

Moore appeared before Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court in Demerara, where he pleaded guilty to the murders of 53-year-old Cheryl Moore and Eukeila Adams, 12.

His sentencing followed the court’s acceptance of the plea, which stemmed from the horrific events of August 14, 2023.

Prosecutors Christopher Belfield, Simran Gajraj, and Geneva Wills presented the State’s case, outlining the deadly circumstances that unfolded at the two-storey wooden house the family shared in Silvertown.

According to the case file, on the night of the fire, Uhalisi’s brother Phillip Moore smelled kerosene and heard suspicious noises before seeing Uhalisi inside the house, armed with a cutlass.

Sensing danger, Phillip fled, and moments later, the home erupted in flames.

Other relatives managed to escape by jumping from the verandah, but Cheryl and Eukeila were trapped inside.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze after midnight, but the home was already destroyed. Cheryl’s remains were recovered around 1:00 a.m., and Eukeila’s body was found hours later in the debris.

Investigators determined that Uhalisi had deliberately soaked furniture with a flammable substance before setting the fire.

In a video-recorded confession at the Wismar Police Station, he claimed he had been hungry for days and felt ignored by relatives, further stating that he heard a “voice” urging him to act.

A post-mortem examination conducted by Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh confirmed that both victims died from burns, with soot in their airways indicating they were alive when the blaze started.

Moore will now serve 24 years at the conclusion of the court’s ruling, with both sentences running concurrently.
