MV BARIMA TRAGEDY: Death toll climbs to 57…

The death toll in the MV Barima tragedy has risen to 57 after four additional bodies were recovered on Wednesday, as Guyana’s multi-agency recovery operation continues with support from regional partners.

In its latest update, the Government of Guyana said 44 of the recovered bodies have been positively identified by family members, while 18 have already been released to their relatives for funeral rites and burial.

The Government also announced that support assets from the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard and the Brazilian Navy have arrived in Guyana’s waters and are en route to assist with the ongoing search, rescue and recovery operations.

A total of 19 vessels and two aircraft are now participating in the operation.

Meanwhile, technical teams are conducting detailed assessments of the capsized MV Barima to determine the safest and most effective method of righting the vessel, a move expected to improve access for divers working at the wreckage site.

Regional authorities and the Ministry of Health continue to work closely with grieving families to facilitate the identification, release and burial of the recovered victims.

The MV Barima sank while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, triggering one of Guyana’s largest maritime search, rescue and recovery operations in recent history.
