Health Ministry warns of fake social media page claiming to identify HIV patients

The Ministry of Health has warned the public about a fraudulent social media page using the name “Guyana HIV victim” (@guyana.hiv.victim) and the Ministry’s official logo without authorisation.

The Ministry said the page is not operated, authorised, endorsed or affiliated with the Ministry of Health and has urged the public to disregard and report the account.

Of particular concern is content on the page that allegedly identifies individuals as living with HIV and claims or suggests access to their medical and treatment information. The Ministry said it has not provided the page or its operators with any patient information.

The Ministry stressed that patients’ medical information, including HIV status and treatment details, is private and confidential. Members of the public are therefore being urged not to submit names, photographs, medical records or other personal information to the account.

The Ministry also cautioned the public to be wary of social media accounts using its name, logo or branding without authorisation and said any such accounts should be reported.

The public is encouraged to rely on the Ministry’s official communication channels and website for accurate health information.

The Ministry condemned the unauthorised use of its logo and any attempt to misrepresent the institution or compromise the privacy and dignity of persons living with HIV.
