Two years after a woman was charged with causing the death of a policeman in a road accident, the charge against her was withdrawn on Tuesday by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.

When the matter was called, the Police prosecutor indicated that based on certain advice he received, he will be discontinuing the charge against 38-year-old Towanda Clarke.

It was alleged that on November 25, 2019, at Brickdam Public Road, Georgetown, she drove motor car PMM 2528 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Carl Roach, a police rank.

This publication was reliably informed that the dead policeman’s family has accepted a $5 million settlement from Clarke.

At the time the charge was instituted against Clarke, she was a Corporate Secretary attached to the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), and resided at 1919 Norton and Haley Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown.

The woman had been on trial for the offence at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. She had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge and was out on $700,000 bail.

According to reports on the day in question at around 03:30 hrs, Clarke who was the driver of motor car, PMM 2528, was proceeding east along the northern side of the Brickdam Public Road.

It was reported that as Clarke approached Chalmers Place, she turned south without stopping thereby colliding with Roach who was on motorcycle CH 9436 which was proceeding west along the southern side.

As a result of the impact, the policeman was flung some 150 feet from the point of impact and onto the road causing him to receive injuries about his body.  He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
