Government, City Council Discuss Vision for New Stabroek Square

November 27 2025
A meeting was held today the Ministry of Housing’s boardroom where the Mayor of Georgetown, Alfred Mentore, and several city councillors were shown a video presentation illustrating what the Stabroek Square—currently under construction—will look like upon completion, along with details of the works involved.
Following the presentation, the City Council responded, “lovely, lovely. This is what is needed.”
The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development noted that the concept had also been publicly presented during a previous stakeholder engagement, where all invitees were briefed on the plan, though not via screen.
According to officials, the Minister has repeatedly spoken about the revival and restoration of Stabroek Square, which remains the guiding objective of the project.
Repairs to the Stabroek Market roof are expected to begin shortly, with the Ministry and the City Council having collaborated on that initiative as well.
The ministry acknowledged public concern after plywood was erected around the construction site but said this measure was necessary for safety and is standard practice for civil works of this nature. The project is expected to be completed in under two weeks.
Officials further advised that two vendors may be temporarily affected by the ongoing works. Instructions have been issued to minimise that impact, and the ministry has committed to engaging those vendors directly. The ministry noted that while some “forces” had advocated for the vendors’ removal, it insisted that “development must have a human face” and confirmed that no vendors will be moved at this point.
The statement urged individuals “external to this process” not to be “opportunistic” or to “stoke divisions for narrow political gain.”
According to the ministry, once completed, the upgraded space will serve vendors, shoppers, commuters, families, children, tourists and artistes alike—creating a more enjoyable atmosphere and supporting increased commercial activity.
The ministry concluded its statement with a commitment: Toward an improved Stabroek Square.
