Lethem Rider Charged with 24 Traffic Violations

A 20-year-old motorcyclist has been fined a total of $330,000 and ordered to perform six months of community service after pleading guilty to 24 traffic-related offences committed over two consecutive days in Lethem, Region Nine.
According to the Guyana Police Force, Romel Bhola of Tabatinga Housing Scheme appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Bhola was charged in relation to offences committed on January 13 and 14, 2026, along Tabatinga Drive, Lethem, Central Rupununi.
Police said Bhola was riding a black motorcycle without identification marks when the offences were committed. He pleaded guilty to all 13 charges arising from the January 13 incident and to an additional 11 charges stemming from the January 14 incident.
The offences included operating an uninsured, uncertified and unlicensed motor vehicle; failure to display front and rear identification marks; improper maintenance of a motor vehicle; making a loud and continuous noise; failure to carry a speedometer, reflecting mirror and direction indicator lights; riding without a safety helmet; and failure to give right of way, among other traffic breaches.
For the second set of offences, Bhola again admitted to similar violations, including operating an uninsured and uncertified motorcycle, failing to display identification marks, improper maintenance, missing safety and indicator equipment, operating without a licence, and making a loud and continuous noise.
In total, 24 charges were laid, resulting in fines amounting to $330,000, with an alternative of 33 weeks’ imprisonment if the fines are not paid.
In addition to the fines, the court ordered Bhola to perform six months of community service at the Lethem Police Station. The community service is scheduled to commence on Friday, January 23, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
