Homeless Teen Pleads Guilty to Armed Robbery

December 9 2024- Kevin Charles, a 19-year-old homeless man, confessed to armed robbery when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday.
His sentencing is scheduled for January 3, 2025.
The court learned that on November 30, 2024, Charles and an accomplice robbed a man on Water Street, Georgetown. The stolen items included a Samsung phone valued at $45,000 and a black wallet containing $10,000, bringing the total value of the theft to $57,000.
In his guilty plea, Charles admitted to being intoxicated during the robbery. Initially claiming to have
acted alone, he later identified his accomplice as Dominique Eastman, a resident of “B” Field Sophia,
Greater Georgetown.
Charles revealed that he had used a knife to intimidate the victim, holding the man by his jersey while Eastman seized the wallet.
While the stolen items were eventually returned to the victim, Charles admitted that the cash had already been spent. He disputed the victim’s claim of $10,000, insisting that the wallet only contained $6,000.
During the hearing, Charles provided insight into his troubled background. He has been homeless since the age of 14, citing the lack of family support. His mother struggles with alcoholism, and his father is bedridden.
Chief Magistrate Mc Gusty noted the severity of the crime and Charles’ transient lifestyle, ordering his remand until sentencing. She also requested a probation report to aid in determining an appropriate sentence.
This incident is not Charles’ first encounter with the law.
In February 2024, he and Eastman were charged with robbing another man on Water Street. The earlier victim reported losing an iPhone 12 valued at $120,000 and $20,000 in cash.
During their initial court appearance for the February offence, Charles and Eastman pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors opposed bail, citing Charles’ unstable lifestyle as a flight risk. Despite being remanded initially, the two men were later granted bail.
