Guyana, Colombia Explore Stronger Agricultural Ties

May 8, 2025 – Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha recently met with H.E Graybern Livingston Forbes, Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to Guyana, to explore enhanced bilateral cooperation in the field of agriculture.
The courtesy call, held at the Ministry of Agriculture, focused on strengthening South-South collaboration through knowledge exchange, innovation, and sustainable agricultural development. The discussions underscored mutual interest in deepening ties and creating strategic partnerships that would benefit both nations’ agricultural sectors.
Ambassador Forbes expressed Colombia’s readiness to partner on various initiatives and praised Guyana’s progress in hydroponic farming, describing it as a model for efficient and sustainable agriculture in the region. The ambassador also emphasized the value of joint research and technical cooperation as key areas for collaboration.
One of the central outcomes of the meeting was a proposal to formalize the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement would provide a framework for joint efforts, including a proposed initiative to further develop Guyana’s cut rose project—a move aimed at boosting local floriculture production.
Minister Mustapha welcomed the proposal and reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to fostering regional partnerships that support innovation, agricultural resilience, and economic growth.
