May 16, 2025 – The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), Guyana’s leading teacher training institution, hosted its annual Open Day yesterday, welcoming more than 400 prospective teacher trainees eager to explore careers in education.

The event attracted a diverse group of attendees, including individuals already serving in classrooms who are seeking formal certification through CPCE’s nationally recognized programmes. The Open Day featured interactive sessions, guided tours, and opportunities to speak directly with faculty, current students, and support staff.

Visitors explored the college’s key academic offerings across three major levels of teacher education—Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary. These programmes support the Ministry of Education’s goal to ensure every classroom is led by a trained educator.

CPCE’s curriculum includes the Associate Degree in Education for general teacher preparation, as well as specialized associate degrees in Special Education, Health and Family Life Education, and Literacy Studies. One-year certification options are also available for individuals pursuing Graduate Teacher Education and Technical Teacher Education.

Participants learned about the opportunity to specialize in various subject areas. These include core academic subjects like Mathematics, English, Social Studies, and Science at the Secondary level, along with the Allied Arts—Physical Education, Visual Arts, and Music. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) offerings include Home Economics, Agricultural Science, Business Studies, Industrial Technology, and Information Technology.

The Open Day reinforced CPCE’s pivotal role in shaping the future of education in Guyana through quality teacher preparation and professional development. Interested individuals can learn more or apply by visiting www.cpce.edu.gy.

Following today’s successful event at the CPCE Turkeyen campus, additional Open Day activities will be held across the country. Scheduled stops include Vreed-en-Hoop (Region 3) on May 20, New Amsterdam and Rose Hall (Region 6) on May 21, Anna Regina (Region 2) on May 22, and Linden (Region 10) and Belladrum (Region 5) on May 23. Outreach dates for hinterland regions will be announced shortly.
