Cordel was not intended target- Relatives

Relatives of 22-year-old Cordel August believe he was not the intended target in Wednesday night’s deadly shooting at Vigilance South, East Coast Demerara, which also claimed the life of 35-year-old Eon Headley.

August, a wash bay attendant of Strathspey, was described by his sisters, Amanda and Iasha Wilkinson, as an easy-going young man with no known conflicts.

Based on what the family has been told, they believe the alleged shooter had a dispute with Headley and that August was caught in the line of fire.

When BIG Smith News Watch visited the crime scene, residents said the gunmen opened fire on the two men before both victims ran in the same direction.

They collapsed a short distance from each other along the same street where the confrontation reportedly began outside a shop.

August’s family said he was still barely alive when his brother-in-law rushed him to the Enmore Regional Hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

According to police, the shooting occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Vigilance South. Investigators said August and Headley were among a group of persons liming at a shop when two men dressed in black arrived on a motorcycle and allegedly opened fire, discharging several rounds in their direction.

Both men sustained suspected gunshot wounds and were transported by public-spirited citizens to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

Their bodies were later taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where post-mortem examinations are pending.

Police have made no arrests and investigations are ongoing.
