Crying baby dies after frustrated mom reportedly throws him into trench

The police in Region 3 are investigating the apparent murder of 21-month-old Ekron Miguel who was reportedly tossed into a nearby trench by his mother on Friday. The incident took place at Jango Street, Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo.

The mother told detectives that she was at the time of the incident returning from Vreed-En-Hoop sometime around 17:00hrs. We were told that the woman is unemployed.

His 18-year old mother told police detectives that she was on the road with her son when she began crying and she assumed that he was hungry so she decided to rest him down at the corner of the road in some bushed wrapped in a blanket and went and beg someone to make some tea for the child.

She reportedly told the person she went to, that if her baby does not get something to eat, he will die, it was at that point that the man questioned the woman about the whereabouts of the baby and she decided to run away and attempted to jump into a nearby canal but was apprehended by a neighbor.

The uncle of the baby who lives close by was then informed of the development and the police were immediately informed.

Once they arrived, the police questioned the woman about the whereabouts of the baby and she took them to a location where she pointed out, a search was then conducted and the baby was found in the trench lifeless.

The body was checked for marks of violence but none was seen. The Suspect was then escorted to Parika Police Station, where she was told of the allegations, cautioned and provided a statement, the remains of the child are awaiting a post-mortem.
