Construction Worker Sentenced to Seven Years, Six Months for Fatal Canje Attack

October 1 2025
Sentencing has been handed down for 25-year-old Trevor Rajmangal, a Berbice construction worker, after he admitted responsibility for the death of Mohamed Abdul Ali, 36.
On Monday, Justice Peter Hugh, presiding at the High Court in Berbice, sentenced Rajmangal to seven years and six months in prison for manslaughter.

Kevin Morgan represented Rajmangal during the proceedings.
Rajmangal had initially been indicted for the capital offence of murder but later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter, which was accepted by State Prosecutor Cicelia Corbin.
The incident occurred between March 18 and March 19, 2023, at West Canefield, East Canje, Berbice. Ali was found lying motionless on Bissessar Street with a visible injury to his eye.
A post-mortem examination determined the cause of death as shock with cerebral haemorrhage due to a fractured skull.
The sentence reflected several mitigating factors. The starting point was 15 years, reduced to 10 years for Rajmangal’s early plea.
Further deductions were applied for time spent on remand (a year and six months) and demonstrated remorse and not wasting judicial time (one year), resulting in the final sentence of seven years and six months.
Justice Hugh also noted the reports submitted during the proceedings, including the probation report outlining Rajmangal’s background and the victim impact statement, which were considered before finalising the sentence.
