A 26-year-old Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD) resident was on Wednesday placed before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on charges of obtaining money by false pretense and uttering a forged document.

The accused, Aucllie Waterton, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, where he pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The first charge alleges that on April 28, 2025, at Georgetown, Waterton, with intent to defraud, obtained $100,000 from Nicola Jones by falsely pretending that he was in a position to secure a lease from the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission.

The second charge further alleges that on the same date, he uttered to Jones a forged lease document purporting to have been issued by the Lands and Surveys Division.

During the proceedings, Waterton’s attorney, Dominick Bess, applied for bail on his client’s behalf. He told the court that Waterton has a fixed place of abode, is a former employee of the Ministry of Housing, and has no prior convictions or pending cases.

According to Bess, his client maintains that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between the parties, a matter which he said should be addressed at trial.

Bess also noted that Waterton had cooperated fully with the police during their investigations and was prepared to comply with any conditions set by the court.

After considering the application, Magistrate McGusty granted Waterton bail in the sum of $100,000. The case was adjourned to October 29.
