First batch of Homes under the Lethem Housing Support Programme Handed Over
Eighteen families hailing from the border town of Lethem in Region Nine were recently bestowed with the keys to their newly acquired homes through the Lethem Housing Support Programme.
The handover transpired during a modest yet poignant ceremony early this morning, taking place within the grounds of the Regional Housing Office.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished individuals, including the Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, alongside notable figures such as Mayor John Macedo of Lethem, Regional Chairman Brian Allicock, Regional Executive Officer Carl Singh, and other esteemed regional representatives.
Minister Croal, in his address to the beneficiaries, underscored the unwavering commitment of the government to provide affordable housing for every Guyanese citizen.
Expanding on the broader perspective, Minister Croal emphasized that the investments in Region Nine should be perceived as a concerted effort to elevate the quality of life for families residing in the hinterland.
Noteworthy mention was made of the ancillary benefits these investments bring to the region, particularly in fostering the growth and resilience of village economies.
The utilization of local labor from communities such as Kwatamang, Shulinab, Shea, Moco Moco, St. Ignatius, and Surama was highlighted, contributing significantly to the production of clay bricks and timber.
The total investment in the homes handed over today amounted to a substantial $53 million.
Each residence, with an approximate valuation of $3 million, received $1 million in support from the Ministry, which was provided in the form of clay bricks and timber.
An additional $2 million was secured through a collaborative partnership with financial institutions. The homes, featuring 550 square feet of space, boast two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a lavatory area.
Commending the initiative, regional representatives expressed their satisfaction at witnessing the project reach its culmination. Furthermore, as the programme advances, contracts have already been inked for the construction of an additional 40 housing units in the Tract CHPA Housing Scheme.
It is imperative to recognize that this progressive initiative is the brainchild of President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who, some time ago, unveiled a heavily subsidized programme aimed at benefiting 600 low-income families.
The far-reaching impact of this endeavor reflects a collective stride towards enhancing living standards and fostering sustainable development within the community.
