Breaking: Five students test positive for coronavirus at Port Mourant Primary

June 9 2026
Staff at the Port Mourant Primary School in Berbice have confirmed that several COVID-19 cases have been identified among students.
Information reaching BIG Smith News Watch indicate that five Grade Five pupils initially tested positive over the weekend.
Following additional testing conducted by nurses from the Port Mourant Hospital, three more students from the same grade also returned positive results, bringing the total to approximately eight cases.
Only Grade Five pupils were tested, raising concern that additional cases may exist among other students who were not screened.
As a precaution, the school was closed for the day to undergo fumigation, while Grade Five students have been instructed to remain at home until Monday. Other grades are expected to resume classes.
Staff members said all affected children are currently at home and not hospitalized.
There are concerns among staff about possible wider exposure, as infected pupils may have interacted with other students before the cases were confirmed.
Staff have also expressed concern about returning to work after only one day of fumigation, given the potential health risks.
Parents are being encouraged to monitor their children and seek testing where necessary, as health and education officials continue to monitor the situation.
The Regional Health Department was unable to provide further information on the matter at this time.
