Seven detained in alleged ‘fake’ kidnapping probe

A reported kidnapping involving a 29-year-old Cuban national has taken a new turn after investigators uncovered inconsistencies in the initial claims, leading to the detention of seven persons as enquiries continue.

The matter reportedly came to light on Wednesday, June 3, after authorities were informed that the man was allegedly being held against his will and that a sum of money was being demanded for his release.

Media reports suggest that 29-year-old Ivan Ravelo Martinez was allegedly abducted and that a ransom demand was made for his release.

Police also launched an investigation after Martinez’s father, who resides in the United States, reportedly received a photograph showing his son with what appeared to be a firearm in his mouth, along with a demand for money.

However, sources have since indicated that Martinez told investigators he was not kidnapped. He allegedly admitted that the photograph was staged using his own air pistol and sent to his father in an attempt to obtain US$1,500.

According to Police, following further enquiries, authorities proceeded to a location in Grove, East Bank Demerara, where the 29-year-old was found inside a motor car in the company of several other individuals.

During a search of the vehicle, an air pistol matching the description of the one seen in the photograph linked to the report was recovered.

Seven persons, including the alleged victim, were taken into custody as investigators continued to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Those detained include a police constable, two Cuban nationals, a taxi driver, a mechanic, another driver, and an unemployed man.

Two motor vehicles and several cellular phones were also seized as part of the ongoing probe.

Investigators have since reported inconsistencies in statements given during interviews with those involved, including the alleged victim, and efforts are ongoing to determine the exact nature of the incident.

No official determination has yet been made regarding the case.
