The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into a police shooting in Sophia that left a 19-year-old labourer hospitalised on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at about 09:20h at Block ‘E’ Sophia, Georgetown, during an operation involving ranks on mobile patrol duty.
According to a GPF report, police had received information that the teen was wanted in connection with an alleged armed robbery investigation.
Ranks reportedly later spotted the suspect riding a motorcycle and attempted to intercept him. Police said the teenager allegedly abandoned the motorcycle and fled into his yard as ranks pursued him.
During the confrontation, a police rank discharged a round from his service firearm, striking the teenager to the left side of his abdomen.
The injured man was subsequently apprehended and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remains under medical care. His condition has been listed as stable.
Investigators recovered one 9mm spent shell at the scene, while the firearm involved in the shooting has been lodged for examination.
