Police in Regional Division #6 are investigating an alleged murder that occurred around 01:30hrs on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Edinburgh Public Road, East Bank Berbice, which resulted in the death of 42-year-old taxi driver Oswain Lawson of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Lawson was at a social gathering at a shop along Edinburgh Public Road when an argument reportedly broke out between him and a 21-year-old man.

The dispute allegedly escalated, during which Lawson was attacked.

Following the incident, Lawson reportedly entered his motor car, registration number HD 8644, and drove away from the location.

However, the vehicle subsequently ended up in a trench a short distance away.

Public-spirited citizens managed to remove him from the vehicle in an unconscious state and rushed him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The matter was initially treated as a fatal accident.

However, upon examination of the body, investigators observed several suspected stab wounds to the upper body, prompting further investigation.

Police later revisited the scene and, based on information received, arrested a 21-year-old contractor of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice.

He is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.

The body of the deceased has since been taken to Arokium Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
