–30 year old boyfriend in custody

By Michael Jordan

Police have detained a 17-year-old girl who fled from a pickup after hitting down and causing the death of 29-year-old pedestrian Deonarine Budram on Sunday night, June 4, 2024, on John’s Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

BIG Smith News Watch has confirmed that the teen’s 30-year-old boyfriend, who is the owner of the vehicle, is also in custody.

The owner of the vehicle is allegedly the teen’s 30-Y-O boyfriend

It is alleged that he had given the unlicensed girl the keys.

According to reports, the two were at a popular Corentyne night spot last Sunday night, when the vehicle’s owner gave the girl the keys to the pickup, registration number GNN 4363, and told her to drive home.

She was allegedly driving west along John’s Public Road at around 21.30 hrs, at an alleged fast rate, when she struck down Deonarine Budram, a labourer of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.

The pickup ended up in a nearby drain and the driver immediately fled the scene.

Budram was pronounced dead at the Port Mourant Public Hospital.

Police found out that an individual, whom they had identified as the owner of the pickup, had sold it to a 30-year-old man about a year ago.

They visited the man’s home, where they allegedly received information that revealed that the teen was the hit and run driver, and that the boyfriend had indeed given her the pickup keys.

Charges are likely soon.
