Election fraud trial to continue April 27–30 as evidence phase closes for one accused

Legal arguments over the admissibility of key evidence is continuing in the ongoing election fraud trial, as proceedings narrowed in on one of the accused, Sheffern February, before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The voir dire — a trial within a trial — examined whether video recordings and statements linked to February can be used in the main case.
A police witness told the court he recorded an interview conducted by investigators with February, while another officer provided details surrounding her arrest.
After presenting its evidence in relation to February, the prosecution brought that phase of its case to a close. February has since taken the stand to challenge the evidence as part of her defence.
Attention then shifted to another accused, Denise Babb-Cummings, with the prosecution continuing its evidence in the voir dire.
Lance Corporal Christopher Douglas testified that he documented an interview between Babb-Cummings and police in August 2025.
The court is expected to rule on whether that material will be admitted.
The wider proceedings involve several former officials connected to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), including former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, former Deputy CEO Roxanne Myers, and former Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo.
Also facing charges are former minister Volda Lawrence, People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) member Carol Smith-Joseph, along with other former GECOM employees.
Collectively, the nine defendants are charged with offences including conspiracy to defraud and misconduct in public office.
They have all denied the allegations and continue on bail.
The case stems from events following the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections, which led to a prolonged dispute and eventual national recount supervised by CARICOM.
The recount confirmed a win for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), resulting in Dr. Irfaan Ali being sworn in as President.
Prosecutors, led by Darshan Ramdhanie, KC, allege that the accused were part of efforts to manipulate results in favour of the APNU+AFC.
The matter is set to resume from April 27 to 30, with additional dates scheduled into May and June as the trial continues.
