Man admits to raping and assaulting married woman

Anthony Jeffrey, also known as Isaiah Jeffrey, is set to be sentenced later this month, following reports submitted during a hearing at the Berbice Assizes before Justice Deborah Kumar-Chetty.

The 29-year-old carpenter pled guilty to charges of rape and assault against a married woman, which occurred in the early hours of March 4, 2024, after he allegedly broke into her home.

Jeffrey expressed remorse for his actions, telling the court, “I am sorry.”

During the sentencing hearing, reports from forensic psychiatrist Dr. Meenawattie Rajkumar, Probation and Welfare Officer Judith Fullerton, Prison Officer Superintendent Patrick Crawford, and the victim were admitted into evidence.

In her impact statement, the victim described enduring significant trauma, including a broken nose, lost teeth, mood swings, and low self-esteem.

She revealed that her relationship with her husband has been strained, and the home they built together is now rented because she cannot bear to remain there.

The welfare officer reported no prior criminal records for Jeffrey within the East Berbice/Corentyne region and highlighted aspects of his background, including his upbringing in an orphanage, residence with family, and work history as a labourer and carpenter.

While Jeffrey experienced personal loss, including the death of his wife three years ago, the officer indicated that he is regarded as a good person within his community.

Superintendent Crawford noted that Jeffrey, who entered prison on March 8, 2024, has displayed no hostility and did not participate in training programmes during his incarceration.
