George Moses of Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown, has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for the 2023 murder of Anthony Williams, following a hearing before Justice Gino Persaud at the High Court in Georgetown

Moses appeared before the Georgetown High Court and expressed remorse to the victim’s family, apologising for the events that led to Williams’ death. He told the court that he did not expect Williams to confront him and that the situation escalated unexpectedly.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Persaud said the starting point for the offence of murder was 30 years’ imprisonment.

The court, however, identified several aggravating factors, including that the offence was committed in the presence of children, the use of a knife, and Moses’ persistence in pursuing Williams after he ran down the stairs in an attempt to escape.

The judge further noted that Moses continued the attack despite opportunities to stop, describing his conduct as demonstrating a violent nature and deeming him a danger to society.

As a result, three years were added to the starting point, increasing the sentence to 33 years.

The court then considered Moses’ apology and deducted three years, returning the sentence to 30 years.

However, Justice Persaud noted that the court did not find the apology to be genuinely remorseful. Moses was granted a further reduction of 10 years due to his early guilty plea, resulting in a final sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment.

The court also ordered that the time Moses spent on remand from July 2023 to January 2026 — amounting to two years and six months — be deducted from the sentence.

This leaves Moses with 17 years and six months remaining to be served in prison.

According to the agreed statement of facts presented to the court, Moses and Williams both lived at the same premises located at Lamaha Street in Kitty, Georgetown.

On March 13, 2023, Moses, who occupied the upper flat of the building, reportedly chased Williams’ children from the upstairs section of the house to the lower level.

This led to a confrontation between the two men.

During the altercation, Moses allegedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed Williams in the back. In an attempt to escape further harm, Williams fled from the yard and ran into a neighbouring property.

Moses reportedly followed him there and inflicted three additional stab wounds.

The incident was witnessed by a police corporal who was in the vicinity at the time. The officer reportedly heard Moses shouting, “I’ll kill you today.”

When Moses noticed the corporal observing the attack, he discarded the knife by throwing it into a nearby trench.

Williams later succumbed to his injuries on April 10, 2023. A post-mortem examination conducted afterwards determined that he died as a result of haemorrhage and shock.

Moses was subsequently arrested by police and cautioned.
