Government Eyes Modernisation Plan for Bourda Market

The government is examining options to upgrade the Bourda Market, with the goal of creating a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable space for both vendors and shoppers.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, recently toured the Bourda Market and the Bourda Grain section, engaging with vendors who raised long-standing concerns about deteriorating infrastructure and limited oversight.

Among the recurring issues highlighted were poor drainage, inadequate sanitation, leaking roofs, faulty washroom facilities, and what vendors described as slow or inattentive responses from the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).

Minister Manickchand noted that the current conditions are unsuitable for sellers and customers alike and stressed that the situation cannot continue.

She also underscored President Dr Irfaan Ali’s broader development vision, which focuses not only on major national projects but also on improving everyday public spaces so that all citizens feel the benefits of national progress.

The minister assured that once plans are finalized, residents and vendors can expect a significantly improved Bourda Market. She explained that the Ministry will review all aspects of the redevelopment, including how to carry out upgrades without disrupting the livelihoods of those who depend on daily sales.

A key aspect of the planned overhaul is preserving the traditional character of Bourda Market while introducing much-needed modern amenities. The ministry is expected to announce the next steps following the completion of its assessments.
