$6.6B State-of-the-Art Hospital Commissioned at Enmore

July 4 2025
Guyana’s healthcare sector marked a major milestone on Friday with the commissioning of a G$6.6 billion state-of-the-art hospital at Enmore, the first of its kind on the East Coast of Demerara, designed and built to European standards.
The facility is expected to significantly boost healthcare access for residents in the region and ease pressure on the country’s central medical institutions.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, and Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Yang Yang, among other officials.
In his address, Ambassador Yang hailed the hospital as an “important milestone” and a reflection of the strong and fruitful relationship between Guyana and China, citing the project as a product of longstanding friendship and bilateral cooperation. She affirmed China’s continued support in helping Guyana maintain and advance its healthcare standards at this facility.
Delivering the feature remarks, President Ali highlighted the country’s transformation over the last five years, pointing to unprecedented levels of infrastructure development. He noted that Guyana is becoming a sought-after destination for human capital and investment, with national growth focused on improving the lives of citizens.
President Ali emphasized that developments like the Enmore hospital are not just about buildings but are designed to improve opportunities, deliver higher-quality services, and empower trained professionals. He also mentioned that salaries and benefits for healthcare workers are increasing, with efforts ongoing to enhance their working environment and capacity.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony described the new facility as a pivotal part of the government’s vision to create a world-class healthcare system. He credited President Ali’s leadership in driving this agenda and noted that similar hospitals are being built in Bath, De Kinderen, Number 75 Village, Lima, and other areas across Guyana.
He explained that while a polyclinic previously existed in Enmore, it offered only limited services. The new hospital, he said, is a transformative upgrade featuring:
🏥 Key Features of the Enmore Hospital:
75-bed capacity, with rooms equipped with toilets, baths, air-conditioning, and a 5-bed per room design
24-hour emergency bay
Two fully equipped operating rooms
Advanced birthing suite
Neonatal and step-down care units
CT scan, ultrasound, X-ray, and laboratory services
Specialized clinics including cardiology, obstetrics, dermatology, gynecology, ophthalmology, and more
Modern dental suite
24-hour pharmacy
Dialysis unit
On-site oxygen generation system
Water distillation plant for clean water across the facility
Employment for 1,000 personnel, including doctors, nurses, clerical staff, and technicians.

Dr. Anthony also stressed that the hospital was developed not only to offer care but to deliver compassionate and people-centered service.
Hundreds of healthcare professionals — doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and support staff — have been trained to ensure high-quality care for all, including pregnant women, children, and vulnerable populations.
Residents of surrounding East Coast communities can now access a broad range of services without needing to travel to Georgetown, representing a major leap in healthcare decentralization.
The hospital is part of the government’s broader plan to build six new hospitals across Guyana to alleviate pressure on the Georgetown Public Hospital and bring better care closer to home.
President Ali noted that the Enmore Hospital stands as a symbol of a healthier, more empowered future for Guyanese families — one where care, opportunity, and quality of life go hand in hand.
