U.S. intercepts sanctioned oil tanker carrying Iranian oil

The United States military has seized a sanctioned oil tanker accused of transporting Iranian crude, marking a significant escalation in ongoing maritime enforcement operations tied to Washington’s sanctions regime.

According to U.S. defense officials, the vessel identified as the Majestic X, a tanker previously sanctioned in 2024 was intercepted in international waters in the Indian Ocean.

The ship, reportedly sailing under a Guyanese flag without authorization, was suspected of carrying Iranian oil in violation of U.S. restrictions and was en route to China at the time of the operation.

Images released by the Pentagon showed U.S. personnel boarding the tanker, underscoring what officials describe as continued efforts to disrupt networks used to evade sanctions on Iran’s oil exports. Authorities allege the vessel has been involved in transporting millions of barrels of Iranian crude since 2023.

The seizure is part of a broader U.S. campaign targeting vessels linked to Iran, with multiple interceptions reported in recent days.

Analysts say the intensified enforcement reflects Washington’s strategy to tighten pressure on Tehran by restricting its ability to generate revenue from oil sales.

The move comes amid rising tensions in the region. Iran has recently seized foreign vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and condemned U.S. interdictions as unlawful, further straining already fragile relations.

Despite a ceasefire agreement announced earlier this month, hostilities at sea have continued. Maritime security concerns have grown, with dozens of vessels reportedly targeted or disrupted since late February, contributing to volatility in global shipping routes and energy markets.

U.S. officials maintain that such operations are essential to enforcing international sanctions and ensuring the security of critical maritime corridors. However, the continued cycle of seizures and retaliatory actions signals a deepening standoff that could further destabilize one of the world’s most vital oil transit regions.
