On November 8, the National Sports Commission (NSC) will celebrate the achievements of Guyana’s top athletes, coaches, and officials at its Annual National Sports Awards, highlighting the country’s sporting excellence in 2024.

The NSC committee, responsible for reviewing submissions from national federations, has completed its assessment and selection process, ensuring a transparent and merit-based approach. Steve Ninvalle, Director of Sport, praised the panel for recognizing the best talent in Guyana.

This year’s awards will spotlight national footballer Omari Glasgow, Guyana’s all-time leading goal scorer, who is nominated for Sportsman of the Year. Glasgow’s outstanding performance in the CONCACAF Nations League earned him both the Best Young Player Award and Top Scorer Award, leading the Golden Jaguars to a historic promotion to League A. He is joined on the shortlist by bodybuilder Nicholas Albert, Olympian Emanuel Archibald, and cricketer Ashmead Nedd.

In the Junior Sportsman of the Year category, track athletes Kaidon Persaud and Malachi Austin, swimmer Raekwon Noel, and chess prodigy Sachin Pitamber are all in contention after impressive performances at regional and international events.

For Sportswoman of the Year, nominees include top squash players Nicholette Fernandes and Ashley Khalil, Taekwondo athlete Ceili Peterson, and bodybuilder Rosanna Fung, who has been making waves in global fitness competitions.

Athaleyah Hinckson, who won Guyana’s first-ever gold medal in the CARIFTA Games U17 women’s 100m and triumphed at the South American U20 Championships, is nominated for Junior Sportswoman of the Year alongside fellow track star Tianna Springer, the CARIFTA 400m champion.

In the Coach of the Year category, Julian Edmonds (Running Brave Track Club) will compete against Ryan Hercules (cricket) and Joseph “Bill” Wilson (Guyana Defence Force Football Club), who have all played vital roles in their athletes’ successes.

The Association of the Year award will see competition among the Guyana Basketball Federation, Guyana Chess Association, Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, and Guyana Golf Association.

For the Sports Official of the Year, male nominees include Michael Singh (GBF president), Shavin Greene (FIFA referee), Vidish Sookram (bodybuilding), and Kerwyn Johnson, while the female category features Natasha George, Denisha Isaacs, and Aileen Bowman-Joseph.

The Media Awards will recognize Rawle Toney (Kaieteur News), Michaelangelo Jacobis (Stabroek News), Jemima Holmes (Guyana Times), Akeem Greene (Newsroom), and Eric Collymore (NCN) for their exceptional sports coverage in 2024.
