The Andrew Lewis Gym reaffirmed its standing as one of Guyana’s premier boxing clubs after claiming the Best Gym title at the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Developmental Tournament, held on July 11 at the Andrew Lewis Gym.

The one-day competition brought together some of the country’s emerging talent, with seven scheduled bouts featuring boxers from the Andrew Lewis Gym (ALG), Harpy Eagle Gym, and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

The tournament also served as another important platform for young fighters to gain valuable ring experience as they continue their development within the local boxing programme.

Several of the night’s contests were decided by walkovers, but the bouts that did take place showcased the promise and competitiveness of Guyana’s next generation of boxers.

The opening three contests all ended in walkovers.

Omar Morris of Harpy Eagle was awarded victory over teammate Tyvonne Grant, while Andrew Lewis Gym’s Josh Chester received a walkover win against Donovon Troy of Harpy Eagle. Junior Madray of the Andrew Lewis Gym also secured a walkover victory over Harpy Eagle’s Denzil Thomas.

Action intensified in the fourth bout as Ken Harvey produced one of the tournament’s most impressive performances.

Representing the Andrew Lewis Gym, Harvey stopped clubmate Izzla Vanderstoop via Referee Stops Contest (RSC) in the second round, demonstrating his superior skill and power.

Lekiam Amores added another victory for the host gym, earning a points decision over Simeon Haymer in a disciplined performance that later earned him the tournament’s Under-19 Best Boxer award.

One of the evening’s closest contests came in Bout Six, where Ezekiel Bancroft edged Isiah Nurse by split decision following an entertaining and evenly matched contest. Bancroft’s display was recognised with the Under-17 Best Boxer award.

The final bout of the tournament saw Guyana Defence Force boxer Wayne July defeat Adrian Adams of the Andrew Lewis Gym on points.

July’s composed performance throughout the contest earned him the Elite Best Boxer title, capping an impressive outing.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the Andrew Lewis Gym was crowned Best Gym after producing several winning performances and individual award recipients. Harpy Eagle Gym finished as runner-up.

The Developmental Tournament forms part of the Guyana Boxing Association’s ongoing efforts to identify and nurture young talent while providing competitive opportunities for novice and intermediate boxers.

Such events remain a vital component of the association’s long-term strategy to strengthen the domestic boxing programme and prepare athletes for future national and international assignments.

With promising performances across the various age groups, the tournament once again highlighted the depth of emerging talent within Guyana’s boxing fraternity and provided encouraging signs for the sport’s continued growth.
